Anitya: Windows Through Windows represents an advanced stage in Loy Luo’s long-term exploration of the “window” as a recurring artistic motif.

The exhibition originated from a response to the unique spatial condition of Loy Luo Space: a corner gallery defined by large transparent windows. Presenting an exhibition about “windows” within a space that is itself a window transforms the gallery from a mere container for artworks into an inseparable part of the exhibition. The exhibition itself thus becomes an integrated artwork.

While Luo’s earlier Windows projects primarily examined the act of seeing and being seen within physical space and its metaphorical implications, Anitya extends this inquiry toward the broader ecology of art itself. Situated on a New York street corner, the transparent exhibition space becomes impossible to overlook, shifting the notion of “being seen” from a visual experience toward questions of attention, recognition, and modes of existence. This line of inquiry also laid the foundation for Endorsement and Nothingness?, Luo’s later exploration of institutional structures and mechanisms of recognition within the art world.

At this stage, the exhibition was no longer merely a site where artworks conveyed meaning, but gradually became the artwork itself. More significantly, this transformation of exhibition into artwork did not occur independently, but emerged naturally after the development of Luo’s concept of the “Image Theater.” Once the image was understood not simply as an object of viewing, but as a theater in which acts of perception unfold, the exhibition space likewise became a larger theater—one that carries relationships between artworks, viewers, institutions, and the generation of meaning itself.
