The Public Life of Art

An artwork does not truly reach completion at the moment the artist finishes creating it.

Although an artwork has already gained a certain degree of subjectivity through the artist’s process, if it never leaves the studio and enters a field where other subjects are present—where it encounters new gazes, responses, and dialogues—its subjectivity remains limited, lacking the possibility of further expansion and enrichment.

From my own experience, when an artwork leaves my studio and enters a public space, or even the environment of a collector, it often undergoes a remarkable transformation. It becomes more mature, more confident, and more dignified. When I encounter it again, I no longer face exactly the same work I once created. Through new relationships, new forms of viewing, and new contexts, it has continued to generate itself.

For this reason, exhibitions are essential to the growth of both artworks and artists.

Exhibitions are equally important to the world itself. Art participates in transforming the world through its continuous act of observing and questioning it. How a society encounters art also reflects how it encounters itself. An exhibition is not merely a presentation of artworks; it creates a field where art encounters other artworks, space, viewers, and the world. Within this field, different subjects interact, influence one another, and generate possibilities that often exceed the expectations of the artist or curator.

Every important exhibition is therefore more than an event. It is a small-scale epic of preparation, dialogue, encounter, reflection, and transformation. Through each exhibition, art expands its own life, while the world, often quietly and imperceptibly, is changed by the presence of art.
